Description
A jali (or jaali) translates as ‘net’ and is the term used for a perforated stone or latticed screen, with an ornamental calligraphy or geometry pattern. Early work was performed by carving into stone, later the Mughals used marble and semi-precious stones to create inlaid patterns.
Typical in Islamic architecture as well as in Indian architecture, this particular series was derived from a small screen window in the Maharaja’s seven- storey palace in Jaisalmer.
