Description
This collection of hand drawn silk-screen prints are the first in a new series of paintings and works on paper by Natasha Kumar. They are observations on the cultural roles available to women in India, and their individual and collective journey to empowerment.
In #suitable match I, Indian Woman strides across pages of matrimonial adverts in search of an astrologically harmonious husband, the prize in a quest for a bride of the right caste and level of education. It’s her dharma, her duty, that she should be married. But as she is educated, she keeps her identity alight among traditional expectations and, empowered by knowledge, retains her voice and independence.
