Description
This collection of hand drawn silk-screen prints are the first in a new series of paintings and works on paper by Natasha Kumar. They are observations on the cultural roles available to women in India, and their individual and collective journey to empowerment.
Abhaya is a mudra (a hand position that is a gesture of reassurance and safety) It is also used as a decorative and spiritual mark – a series of right-handed prints are pressed into the mud walls of the home to offer divine protection and to dispel fear, evil and ignorance.
In this instance, the Indian Woman’s hand prints are soft, glowing gold and will surely banish the shadows of ignorance, making her a standard-bearer of knowledge and lighting the path for Indian women to fulfilment and prosperity.
