Natasha Kumar’s Rasa series is an extension of her fine architectural studies of chhatris, inspired by the stone-carved concentric circles on the underside of the chhatri dome.
Rasa can mean emotion or essence: just as the hypnotising images of the series symbolise the harmony of circling planets, their vivid colours reflect the emotional essence of a mood.
Delicate etching and monoprints on paper with rich colours and deep textures, Natasha Kumar’s new Rasa collection brings together the abstract and the actual in vivid, hypnotising work that references Mughal architecture and her Indian heritage.
The Cosmic series is inspired by the geometric designs found in all forms of decorative work in the Indian Palaces. A framework of geometric lines constructed by circles representing the great celestial circles of the planets. For Natasha Kumar it completes the Rasa collection, following the path of Krishna and his gopis through the cosmic universe during the Rasa Lila, their transcendental dance of love.
